Archbishop Tenison’s School

55 Kennington Oval, London SE11 5SR

Archbishop Tenison’s School was founded in 1685 and moved to its present site in 1927. It is a Church of England 11-16 co-ed secondary school and became an academy within the Southwark Board of Education Multi-Academy Trust (SDBE MAT) in 2018. The school has a long and proud history which it celebrates each year with a Founder’s Day service at St Martin in the Fields church in Trafalgar Square where it was founded. As a small school we are able to provide a warm and welcoming community where all staff, students and families know and support each other well.

The curriculum offer is broad and balanced, providing a strong academic core as well as a range of foundation subjects. This allows our students to develop their knowledge and intellectual curiosity as well as to develop practical skills and become increasingly independent learners.

At GCSE, all students follow courses in English Literature and Language, Mathematics, Science (Triple Science or Combined) and Religious Studies. Over 60% of students also study French or Spanish and History and/or Geography to provide them with the full EBacc suite of qualifications. Our foundation subjects include Art, Business Studies, Computing, Design and Technology and Music. All students at Key Stage 4 have a session of core PE either at Motspur Park or in our PE facilities in the school. Typically, a quarter of students will choose to develop this into a GCSE in Sports Science.

While we occupy a compact site in Kennington, we are fortunate to have use of extensive sports facilities at Motspur Park where students engage in a range of sports and where we hold our annual Sports Day. We also use a range of other local facilities.

Our school motto is “Educating Mind, Body and Spirit since 1685”. This is an expression of our mission to educate the whole child as a healthy, happy, intellectually engaged and considerate citizen as well as providing them with the qualifications they need to open doors to future success. As a faith school, we also take seriously our responsibility to help young people develop their religious and humanist spiritual dimension, providing them with opportunities to explore the nature of faith in a multi-faith society and to debate the big moral and ethical issues of our time.

We aim to be a research-informed school where all teachers are encouraged to deepen their professional skills through reading, workshops, Teach Meets and INSET days. We have a very strong programme of induction for trainee teachers, whether PGCE, School Direct or Now Teach. Our more experienced teachers are encouraged to contribute to this programme to share their developing practice.

We are very conveniently located close to Oval tube and the Oval Cricket ground and staff and students benefit from our strong community links. We are also part of Oval Learning Cluster which provides opportunities to work with a range of local primary schools, involving them in drama and music productions, providing specialist teaching in English and Maths for their more able pupils and working collaboratively with staff.
