The ECT Induction Years Journey: A Month-by-Month Guide

How might an ideal Induction run?

We’ll follow the induction of a fictitious ECT, Evie, to highlight all of the things that should happen during induction – we’ll make the following assumptions:
  • She’ll begin her induction in September and work full-time through to completing in the July of the following academic year.
  • She will have no issues with her progress towards successfully completing induction at any stage of her induction.

Please also bear in mind that, whilst Appropriate Bodies will administer induction periods and expect schools to manage them in broadly similar ways, they will all have their own nuances and ways of doing things – this should be read as a stand-alone article, and does not necessarily reflect the way in which any current Appropriate Body works, but as a guide to how induction might run.

Year One - Assessment Period One (AP1)

Induction Period One (IP1) – September to December

September

  • Evie will have been registered with an Appropriate Body of the school’s choosing
  • Evie will begin her Early Career Framework training programme in one of three ways:
  • 1 - by following a Provider-led training programme - either the programme recommended by the Appropriate Body or a programme through an alternative Lead Provider
  • 2 - by following a school-led training programme, with the school using one of the four sets of Lead Provider materials available
  • 3 - by following a fully school-designed training programme
  • Evie will also begin to receive her 10% timetable reduction for induction-based activities – this should be given as either a morning or afternoon each week or a full day each fortnight.
  • Evie will be observed teaching – there shouldn’t be a specific focus to this observation, but it will have allowed all concerned to gain a ‘baseline’ of Evie’s skills and abilities, so that an initial Action and Development Plan (which will highlight the support Evie will receive to progress towards meeting the Teachers’ Standards at the end of her induction) can be drawn up.
  • Evie will have the first meeting with her Induction Tutor - this will allow them to begin to build an open and honest relationship and also input into the initial ADP and set a Timeline for IP1 (which will highlight when events will take place during this part of induction).
  • Evie’s initial ADP and IP1 Timeline should both be set.

October

  • In the last week of Term One - or the first week of Term Two - Evie will have the second meeting with her Induction Tutor, to formally review her ADP and discuss any issues she or the school may have.

November

  • If not held in the last week of Term One, Evie will have her second meeting with her Induction Tutor during the first week of Term Two.
  • Evie will be observed teaching for a second time.
  • The first Progress Review process of Evie’s induction should begin.

December

  • The first Progress Review process of Evie’s induction should be concluded, with a completed Progress Review Form being submitted to the Appropriate Body.

Induction Period Two (IP2) – December to March

January

  • Evie will have the third meeting with her Induction Tutor, to review her ADP, discuss any issues she or the school may have with any aspect of her induction and to set a Timeline for IP2.
  • Evie will be observed teaching for a third time.

February

  • In the last week of Term Three - or the first week of Term Four - Evie will have the fourth meeting with her Induction Tutor, to review her ADP and discuss any issues she or the school may have.

Late February/early March

  • Evie will be observed teaching for a fourth time.

March

  • The second Progress Review process of Evie’s induction will take place, with a completed Progress Review Form being submitted to the Appropriate Body.

Induction Period Three (IP3) – March to July

April

  • Evie will have the fifth meeting with her Induction Tutor, to review her ADP, discuss any issues she or the school may have with any aspect of her induction and to set a Timeline for IP3.

May

  • Evie will be observed teaching for a fifth time.
  • In the last week of Term Five - or the first week of Term Six - Evie will have the sixth meeting with her Induction Tutor, to review her ADP and discuss any issues she or the school may have.

June

  • If not held in the last week of Term Five, Evie will have her sixth meeting with her Induction Tutor during the first week of Term Six
  • Evie will be observed teaching for a sixth time.

July

  • The formal assessment process for AP1 of Evie’s induction will take place, with a completed Assessment Report submitted to the Appropriate Body.

Year Two – Assessment Period Two (AP2)

Year Two will run in exactly the same way as Year One, except the ADP in place at the end of AP1 should continue into AP2, so the September meeting with her induction Tutor should amend this ADP and not set a new one, and her timetable reduction for induction-based activities will be reduced to 5% - given as either a morning or afternoon each fortnight or a full day each four weeks.

When the Appropriate Body receives a final assessment report, recommending that Evie be considered as having successfully completed induction, they will (in all but the most extreme of cases) agree with the school's recommendation and process the report with that in mind.
Once the Appropriate Body have processed the report, Evie, her Induction Tutor, Induction Mentor, and Headteacher (and new school, should Evie be moving school at this point) will be emailed to notify them that they will be recommending to the TRA that Evie be considered as having successfully completed induction.

A return will then be made online to the TRA; their system will process the return overnight and change the status of Evie’s entry on their database from 'Completing Induction' to 'Pass'.
Evie will then be able to log into the Teacher Services Database and access her completion of induction certificate.

Congratulations, Evie, on reaching the end of your induction period…
