St Mark’s is an inclusive one-form entry Church of England Primary School in the heart of Oval. Our diverse intake reflects the local area and the school maintains the feel of a welcoming, close-knit family. Christian values are at the core of our ethos, helping to create a warm, caring environment, within which children feel safe, valued and in which they can thrive in all areas of their development.
Our size enables us to nurture each child throughout the whole school and work in close partnership with all members of the school community. This is reflected in how well we know and work with our children and families and how well we cater for the needs of all pupils at the school. It is also demonstrated through three years of sustained high attainment and strong progress in the core subjects across the school.
Our quality teaching gives our pupils the opportunity to truly flourish during their time at St Mark's. With our broad, inspirational curriculum, we can ensure rigorous academic challenges and exciting and memorable learning experiences. We have extensive playground space and wildlife and pond area, which is used to enrich children's learning.
Our location has enabled us to form well established relationships with local organisations, including Kia Oval, Into University, the Oval house Theatre, Oval Tube Station, St Mark's Church and Southwark Playhouse. All of these partnerships significantly contribute to the learning and experiences of children at St Mark's and broaden their opportunities.
We were judged as a 'GOOD' School by Ofsted in December 2015, who mentioned among other things: the school's rapid progress, good leadership capacity, rich curriculum and quality of teaching as significant strengths.
We can offer you:
A ‘Good’ Church of England school with pupils who are motivated and enthusiastic about their learning
An excellent school ethos with strong links with the parish community and partnership schools
Strong and committed leadership, and a supportive governing body
Friendly and social colleagues
Excellent opportunities to continuous professional development
Comprehensive support network through the Southwark Diocesan Board of Education

Holmewood Nursery school is situated in Central Lambeth, off Brixton Hill. The school is located in a densely populated area of contrasting households in terms of culture, ethnicity, and socio-economic status.
Holmewood provides education for children in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with 95 full time equivalent places in the main nursery (2 - 4 year olds) and 12 full time equivalent places in the two year old provision. The school's intake is very culturally diverse with a high percentage of children from mixed, or Black-British / Caribbean / African backgrounds. Nearly half of the children speak English as an additional language, with many at the early stages of learning English.
Holmewood is federated with Maytree and Triangle Nursery Schools. As a Federated Nursery School, Holmewood is led by an Executive Head Teacher, Head of School and teachers working with other qualified early years practitioners. Holmewood offers highly inclusive education with qualified and caring staff. It has rich and varied indoor and outdoor learning environments that allow children to play and be active in developing and acquiring new skills and knowledge; children are well motivated and are thoroughly absorbed in their learning.
They are encouraged to experiment and explore and children are very well challenged to enable them to take risks safely and develop their own problem solving skills. Outdoor learning is supported through the Natural Thinkers curriculum and an extensive allotment.
Each child is allocated a Key Person, one of our skilled early years educators or teachers. They get to know the children in their group very well and work in collaboration with their parents. Teachers and practitioners support, encourage and facilitate learning opportunities so that children are happy, confident and independent learners.
All teachers and practitioners have a thorough understanding of children’s early learning and development and the early years foundation stage and understand the importance of working together with parents and other professionals.
At Holmewood, we believe in investing in professional development and bespoke training to meet individual needs so that all teachers and practitioners feel motivated and committed to the continuing success of the school.
Visits to the school can be arranged by contacting the school office.
