Clapham Manor Primary School

Belmont Road, London, SW4 0BZ

Clapham Manor is located in Clapham Old Town, close to the main High Street and Clapham Common tube station. Clapham Manor was built in 1881, with extensions in 1928, 1945 and 2008. It has three floors with fourteen classrooms, together with a library, music room, a food technology room and two large halls. (The lower hall is also the dining room).

The school has two sites: the primary school is located on the main site, and the nursery and Children’s Centre are on the second site.

The main school has three separate small playgrounds. The smallest is used exclusively for Reception. The playgrounds are well equipped with climbing frames and play areas for quiet and imaginative games. The Olympic playground is used for physical education and features an astro turf pitch and an athletics track. There is also a nature garden in the playground.

We have 420 children aged 5 – 11 years. The Nursery class has 22 part-time places and 15 full-time places and there are approximately 30 two-year-olds in our Children’s Centre. For further information on the Children’s Centre, please click the link on the right.

The children usually spend three terms in the Nursery before going into the Reception class in the year they turn five. In the infant and junior departments there are 30 children in each class. All classes are supported by teaching assistants. We can take up to 60 children in each academic year. All the classes are mixed ability.

Ms Renuka Chinnadurai is the Headteacher and Mr Nigel Haselden is the Chair of Governors. A list of staff and governors is shown under separate headings.

During our last Ofsted Inspections in 2007 both the school and the Children’s Centre were given outstanding reports, and in May 2012 the Children’s Centre Services was again given an outstanding inspection report for the services provided for parents and young children in the local community.

In 2006 we were given the Active Mark for Sport and the Healthy School Award. In May 2012 we were awarded the Arts Council England gold award for a second time.

In 2010 we were awarded the Quality Mark by the Basics Skill Agency.

We have a School Council which meets once per term to discuss school issues. The Council consists of elected children from each class, some members of staff and the Headteacher. Agendas and minutes are published and can be viewed on the children’s display screen on the entrance lobby.

Clapham Manor is part of a collaborative formed by 5 local primary schools, a secondary school and a local nursery. For further information about our collaborative, please click the link on the right.

Our new school extension was nominated for the RIBA Stirling Prize, and came second.

We ensure that all pupils, regardless of race, class, gender, disabilities, special needs, religion or culture, have equal access to a broad, balanced, and differentiated curriculum and are provided with opportunities to develop their self-esteem, confidence, and full potential in a rich and stimulating environment.

  • “Pupils' behaviour is second to none. They are eager to learn. They are kind, confident, articulate young people. They respect those from all backgrounds and heritages.”

  • “The school's values are shared by its whole community. Pupils leave Ashmole exceptionally well prepared to take their place in society as fully rounded citizens.”

  • “All adults share the drive to raise pupils' aspirations and provide them with extensive chances to take responsibility and to think for themselves.”

  • “Adults are caring. Children are kept safe. Adults all know each child and provide for their individual needs extremely well.”

The school is easily reached from most areas of London being situated in Kennington and only minutes away from Oval Underground Station.

Holmewood Nursery school is situated in Central Lambeth, off Brixton Hill.  The school is located in a densely populated area of contrasting households in terms of culture, ethnicity, and socio-economic status.

Holmewood provides education for children in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with 95 full time equivalent places in the main nursery (2 - 4 year olds) and 12 full time equivalent places in the two year old provision.  The school's intake is very culturally diverse with a high percentage of children from mixed, or Black-British / Caribbean / African backgrounds. Nearly half of the children speak English as an additional language, with many at the early stages of learning English.

Holmewood is federated with Maytree and Triangle Nursery Schools.  As a Federated Nursery School, Holmewood is led by an Executive Head Teacher, Head of School and teachers working with other qualified early years practitioners. Holmewood offers highly inclusive education with qualified and caring staff.  It has rich and varied indoor and outdoor learning environments that allow children to play and be active in developing and acquiring new skills and knowledge; children are well motivated and are thoroughly absorbed in their learning.

They are encouraged to experiment and explore and children are very well challenged to enable them to take risks safely and develop their own problem solving skills. Outdoor learning is supported through the Natural Thinkers curriculum and an extensive allotment.

Each child is allocated a Key Person, one of our skilled early years educators or teachers. They get to know the children in their group very well and work in collaboration with their parents. Teachers and practitioners support, encourage and facilitate learning opportunities so that children are happy, confident and independent learners.

All teachers and practitioners have a thorough understanding of children’s early learning and development and the early years foundation stage and understand the importance of working together with parents and other professionals.

At Holmewood, we believe in investing in professional development and bespoke training to meet individual needs so that all teachers and practitioners feel motivated and committed to the continuing success of the school.
