At Henry Fawcett Primary School, we are at the heart of our urban community. Located next to Oval Cricket Ground and Tube station, we are just 15 minutes by public transport from London’s bustling Southbank and the River Thames.
Our school motto is ‘Yes We Can’ and embodies our ambitions for our pupils; we strongly believe that every child deserves the best start in life, that they are exposed to outstanding educational opportunities and leave us with a thirst for lifelong learning. We guide children on their learning journey, motivating them to become independent learners with high personal goals. We take great pride in our pupils and have delivered consistently good outcomes at all key stages over a number of years and pupils in all year groups make extremely strong progress.
Judged as ‘Outstanding’ in all areas by Ofsted in May 2017, inspectors found that the quality of teaching is consistently excellent and adults expect the very best from the pupils; children with special educational needs make strong progress against their own targets and the support provided to children with EAL ensures they quickly catch up and achieve extremely well. No pupil is overlooked and all make exceptional progress.
Our bespoke curriculum is engaging and creative with Centre for Literacy in Primary Education Power of Reading at its heart, and ever evolving to meet the needs of our children.
We are a member of the Oval Learning cluster of local schools and we pride ourselves on taking a leading role on the delivery of the Lambeth Teaching Schools Alliance’s high quality NQT programme.
All staff contribute to the friendly and supportive working environment. PPA is organised so that year group teachers can plan together and cover is provided by our own staff to ensure continuity of teaching. The high quality CPD which the school invests in ensures that staff are challenged and developed and are equipped with the skills and knowledge to excel.
The school offers a fantastic learning environment where each year group has an additional room in which to deliver learning. Creativity and performance are key at our school and we have invested in high quality staging, sound and lighting equipment. We have two playground spaces to provide children with the space and freedom to enjoy play times and PE. Our rooftop library provides a calm environment to develop the children’s love of reading.
We work closely with families to involve them in their child’s learning. Events for parents and carers to celebrate and showcase the children’s work are well attended.
Our fantastic Children’s Centre delivers a full and innovative programme of events and services to the local community and provides the bridge for local families about to start school. The onsite LEYF Nursery can provide convenient childcare options for staff.
Holmewood Nursery school is situated in Central Lambeth, off Brixton Hill. The school is located in a densely populated area of contrasting households in terms of culture, ethnicity, and socio-economic status.
Holmewood provides education for children in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with 95 full time equivalent places in the main nursery (2 - 4 year olds) and 12 full time equivalent places in the two year old provision. The school's intake is very culturally diverse with a high percentage of children from mixed, or Black-British / Caribbean / African backgrounds. Nearly half of the children speak English as an additional language, with many at the early stages of learning English.
Holmewood is federated with Maytree and Triangle Nursery Schools. As a Federated Nursery School, Holmewood is led by an Executive Head Teacher, Head of School and teachers working with other qualified early years practitioners. Holmewood offers highly inclusive education with qualified and caring staff. It has rich and varied indoor and outdoor learning environments that allow children to play and be active in developing and acquiring new skills and knowledge; children are well motivated and are thoroughly absorbed in their learning.
They are encouraged to experiment and explore and children are very well challenged to enable them to take risks safely and develop their own problem solving skills. Outdoor learning is supported through the Natural Thinkers curriculum and an extensive allotment.
Each child is allocated a Key Person, one of our skilled early years educators or teachers. They get to know the children in their group very well and work in collaboration with their parents. Teachers and practitioners support, encourage and facilitate learning opportunities so that children are happy, confident and independent learners.
All teachers and practitioners have a thorough understanding of children’s early learning and development and the early years foundation stage and understand the importance of working together with parents and other professionals.
At Holmewood, we believe in investing in professional development and bespoke training to meet individual needs so that all teachers and practitioners feel motivated and committed to the continuing success of the school.
Visits to the school can be arranged by contacting the school office.
