Christ Church Primary SW9

Cancell Road London, SW9 6HN

Christ Church Primary SW9 is a one-form entry, voluntary aided primary school in Brixton. We are a small and friendly school with a good reputation in the local community. We have good relationships with our families and we know our children very well. Our core purpose is to inspire life-long, confident learners and to prepare all our children for a successful future.  We are totally dedicated to providing an enjoyable and stimulating educational experience for our children.

At Christ Church SW9 we don’t believe that learning takes place solely in the classroom.  We believe that the outdoor environment has a huge potential for learning.  We are incredibly lucky, therefore, to have a large amount of natural outdoor space and this unique feature has inspired us to develop an outstanding outdoor learning curriculum.  Combined with our dedication to the creative arts and music, Christ Church offers a personalised and holistic learning environment.

Our curriculum at Christ Church reflects the cultural diversity of our school and is designed to be exciting and interesting. Our aim is to ensure that all pupils achieve their full potential through a wide range of educational experiences. Our location in the heart of Lambeth means that the whole of London is on our doorstep. Our children frequently visit art galleries, museums and theatres. We regularly work in partnership with professional artists and musicians and have links with the National Theatre.

We promote enjoyment for learning at all times and encourage children to be independent, reflective learners through the development of thinking skills.

In 2016, Christ Church SW9 joined forces with another local primary school, St. Andrew’s CE Primary School and together we form the SW9 Partnership. Our federation is an excellent place to start or further your career. We are dedicated to staff development and all members of our team have access to high quality in-house and external training opportunities. We also offer the opportunity for our staff to work towards a qualification such as the NPQML, NPQSL, NVQ or other accredited course. As a member of the Christ Church team you will not only be given support in your current role, but you will be encouraged to develop your potential.

At Christ Church our expertise does not just remain in our school, but is widely shared. We offer placements for the School Direct programme via the London Diocesan Board for Schools, several members of our staff team are Specialist Leaders of Education and we are also a strategic partner in the Lambeth Teaching Schools’ Alliance.

Holmewood Nursery school is situated in Central Lambeth, off Brixton Hill.  The school is located in a densely populated area of contrasting households in terms of culture, ethnicity, and socio-economic status.

Holmewood provides education for children in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with 95 full time equivalent places in the main nursery (2 - 4 year olds) and 12 full time equivalent places in the two year old provision.  The school's intake is very culturally diverse with a high percentage of children from mixed, or Black-British / Caribbean / African backgrounds. Nearly half of the children speak English as an additional language, with many at the early stages of learning English.

Holmewood is federated with Maytree and Triangle Nursery Schools.  As a Federated Nursery School, Holmewood is led by an Executive Head Teacher, Head of School and teachers working with other qualified early years practitioners. Holmewood offers highly inclusive education with qualified and caring staff.  It has rich and varied indoor and outdoor learning environments that allow children to play and be active in developing and acquiring new skills and knowledge; children are well motivated and are thoroughly absorbed in their learning.

They are encouraged to experiment and explore and children are very well challenged to enable them to take risks safely and develop their own problem solving skills. Outdoor learning is supported through the Natural Thinkers curriculum and an extensive allotment.

Each child is allocated a Key Person, one of our skilled early years educators or teachers. They get to know the children in their group very well and work in collaboration with their parents. Teachers and practitioners support, encourage and facilitate learning opportunities so that children are happy, confident and independent learners.

All teachers and practitioners have a thorough understanding of children’s early learning and development and the early years foundation stage and understand the importance of working together with parents and other professionals.

At Holmewood, we believe in investing in professional development and bespoke training to meet individual needs so that all teachers and practitioners feel motivated and committed to the continuing success of the school.

Visits to the school can be arranged by contacting the school office.
