Rosendale Primary School

Rosendale Primary School, Rosendale Road, West Dulwich, SE21 8LR

Rosendale is an outstanding Primary School with its own Children’s Centre for babies and toddlers from 6 months, and a Nursery for children from aged 3.

Rosendale is part of the Great North Wood Academy Trust, and we work very closely with The Elmgreen Secondary School.

Rosendale is a training centre for teaching staff being a GLA Excellence Hub for lesson study, we have been awarded the International School Award 2016-19 for our outstanding development of the international dimension in the curriculum and are one of only 22 Research Schools in the country – the only one in London.

We are a school where everyone is welcomed, efforts are valued, ambition is nurtured and where the potential of every child is realised.  We believe that this vision statement is manifest in the following values and actions in our school:

  • We have pride in ourselves, in our endeavours and in our achievements;

  • We are reflective and thoughtful about experiences, learning from our failures so that we are prepared to be better tomorrow;

  • We encourage co-operation and collaboration, everyone taking responsibility for all that they say and do;

  • We celebrate and respect the diverse community in which we live and appreciate our responsibilities as global citizens;

  • We equip young people with the knowledge, skills and critical thinking, to challenge and debate in an informed way;

  • We promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance;

  • We are determined and courageous in all that we encounter and are equipped to deal with the future;

  • We provide a safe and stimulating space to work and play in which learning is fun and enjoyable.

  • A Rosendale pupil will develop high level knowledge and skills across the curriculum, meeting or exceeding the levels expected of an outstanding school;

  • A Rosendale pupil will gain deep experience of project working, developing key skills of research, analysis, independent working, time management and presentation;

  • A Rosendale pupil will enjoy rich experience in music and the creative and performing arts, including learning and performing on a musical instrument and in thriving choirs and orchestra;

  • A Rosendale pupil will become a fluent user of modern ICT and New Technologies.  At our last inspection Ofsted said that Rosendale had set a national benchmark for the outstanding and innovative use of ICT in teaching and learning;

  • A Rosendale pupil will learn a language and be encouraged to develop global perspectives.  Rosendale is a hub school in a national programme to support learning of Mandarin Chinese.

Rosendale celebrates its diversity and has high and equal expectations of all pupils, regardless of social, cultural, linguistic or ethnic background.  Parents and carers are encouraged to be deeply involved in their children’s learning and in the life of the school and we aim to provide a vivid picture of school and classroom life through the classroom blogs.

  • “Pupils' behaviour is second to none. They are eager to learn. They are kind, confident, articulate young people. They respect those from all backgrounds and heritages.”

  • “The school's values are shared by its whole community. Pupils leave Ashmole exceptionally well prepared to take their place in society as fully rounded citizens.”

  • “All adults share the drive to raise pupils' aspirations and provide them with extensive chances to take responsibility and to think for themselves.”

  • “Adults are caring. Children are kept safe. Adults all know each child and provide for their individual needs extremely well.”

The school is easily reached from most areas of London being situated in Kennington and only minutes away from Oval Underground Station.

Visits to the school are always welcome.

Holmewood Nursery school is situated in Central Lambeth, off Brixton Hill.  The school is located in a densely populated area of contrasting households in terms of culture, ethnicity, and socio-economic status.

Holmewood provides education for children in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with 95 full time equivalent places in the main nursery (2 - 4 year olds) and 12 full time equivalent places in the two year old provision.  The school's intake is very culturally diverse with a high percentage of children from mixed, or Black-British / Caribbean / African backgrounds. Nearly half of the children speak English as an additional language, with many at the early stages of learning English.

Holmewood is federated with Maytree and Triangle Nursery Schools.  As a Federated Nursery School, Holmewood is led by an Executive Head Teacher, Head of School and teachers working with other qualified early years practitioners. Holmewood offers highly inclusive education with qualified and caring staff.  It has rich and varied indoor and outdoor learning environments that allow children to play and be active in developing and acquiring new skills and knowledge; children are well motivated and are thoroughly absorbed in their learning.

They are encouraged to experiment and explore and children are very well challenged to enable them to take risks safely and develop their own problem solving skills. Outdoor learning is supported through the Natural Thinkers curriculum and an extensive allotment.

Each child is allocated a Key Person, one of our skilled early years educators or teachers. They get to know the children in their group very well and work in collaboration with their parents. Teachers and practitioners support, encourage and facilitate learning opportunities so that children are happy, confident and independent learners.

All teachers and practitioners have a thorough understanding of children’s early learning and development and the early years foundation stage and understand the importance of working together with parents and other professionals.

At Holmewood, we believe in investing in professional development and bespoke training to meet individual needs so that all teachers and practitioners feel motivated and committed to the continuing success of the school.
