Vauxhall Primary School

Vauxhall Street, London, SE11 5LG

Excellence and enjoyment - two words that best describe what being part of Vauxhall Primary School is all about. A deep understanding of the needs of our pupils shapes the provision we offer. It is a continuous endeavour for all of our staff to know our pupils well. We strive to deliver a relevant, engaging and rigorous curriculum through a culture of high expectations and a consistent demand for excellence. We do not rest until good becomes better and better becomes best.

Vauxhall serves a range of pupils who represent the diversity of the local area. We have experienced staff that all share the outstanding ambitions for the school. Vauxhall is well regarded by parents and some of their contributions have helped to shape the priorities and direction of the school.  The most recent Ofsted inspection graded the school as Outstanding in all areas. In addition to the importance of academic achievement, the school seeks to provide many opportunities for pupils to develop interests and talents in the arts, sports and environmental education. The behaviour of our pupils is outstanding as a result of a positive ethos, the Vauxhall Core Values, a focus on enjoyment and an expectation of participation and contribution by everyone connected to the school.

We take full advantage of our high quality partnerships to enrich and enhance our pupils’ experience of school. This may be through performance opportunities with, for example, The Russian Ballet, English Touring Opera or collaboration with other schools in the Wyvern Federation. Our pupils take pride in our sporting excellence, having won accolades in cricket, netball, football, tri-golf, tennis, athletics and many more.

In 2016, Vauxhall was named The TES Primary School of the Year for “its extremely high expectations and ambitious and inspirational delivery of an exciting curriculum. Children achieve highly and foster a deep love of learning.”  Ann Mroz, Editor, TES, commented: “Vauxhall Primary School is an outstanding example of excellence in education, demonstrating a relentless drive to innovate and improve...”

We are a National Support School and a recognised Teaching School. Such status enables us to share best practice with colleagues all over the country and for our staff to learn from them. We are a highly innovative school and we value collaboration at all levels.  We also have the UNICEF Rights Respecting School’s Award Gold standard (August 2018), demonstrating that Vauxhall is a school where pupils are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive.  These values are embedded in daily school life and give pupils the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives, and to be responsible, active citizens.

Pupils, staff, visitors and members of the community, comment on our distinct “family feel”. Our “Vauxhall family” is every member of the school community.  We embrace and celebrate our diversity, enjoy the loyalty and support of our families, and always look after each other.  We look forward to any future involvement you may have as a parent, colleague, visitor or friend of Vauxhall.

Vauxhall benefits from being part of the Wyvern Federation of Schools; four ‘Outstanding’ schools all within walking distance that provide mutual support and share their expertise with each other.

  • “Pupils' behaviour is second to none. They are eager to learn. They are kind, confident, articulate young people. They respect those from all backgrounds and heritages.”

  • “The school's values are shared by its whole community. Pupils leave Ashmole exceptionally well prepared to take their place in society as fully rounded citizens.”

  • “All adults share the drive to raise pupils' aspirations and provide them with extensive chances to take responsibility and to think for themselves.”

  • “Adults are caring. Children are kept safe. Adults all know each child and provide for their individual needs extremely well.”

The school is easily reached from most areas of London being situated in Kennington and only minutes away from Oval Underground Station.

Holmewood Nursery school is situated in Central Lambeth, off Brixton Hill.  The school is located in a densely populated area of contrasting households in terms of culture, ethnicity, and socio-economic status.

Holmewood provides education for children in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with 95 full time equivalent places in the main nursery (2 - 4 year olds) and 12 full time equivalent places in the two year old provision.  The school's intake is very culturally diverse with a high percentage of children from mixed, or Black-British / Caribbean / African backgrounds. Nearly half of the children speak English as an additional language, with many at the early stages of learning English.

Holmewood is federated with Maytree and Triangle Nursery Schools.  As a Federated Nursery School, Holmewood is led by an Executive Head Teacher, Head of School and teachers working with other qualified early years practitioners. Holmewood offers highly inclusive education with qualified and caring staff.  It has rich and varied indoor and outdoor learning environments that allow children to play and be active in developing and acquiring new skills and knowledge; children are well motivated and are thoroughly absorbed in their learning.

They are encouraged to experiment and explore and children are very well challenged to enable them to take risks safely and develop their own problem solving skills. Outdoor learning is supported through the Natural Thinkers curriculum and an extensive allotment.

Each child is allocated a Key Person, one of our skilled early years educators or teachers. They get to know the children in their group very well and work in collaboration with their parents. Teachers and practitioners support, encourage and facilitate learning opportunities so that children are happy, confident and independent learners.

All teachers and practitioners have a thorough understanding of children’s early learning and development and the early years foundation stage and understand the importance of working together with parents and other professionals.

At Holmewood, we believe in investing in professional development and bespoke training to meet individual needs so that all teachers and practitioners feel motivated and committed to the continuing success of the school.
